Question 1

How does the AI face shape detector work?

Accepted Answer

The detector maps key facial landmarks in your photo — the outer edges of your forehead, cheekbones, and jawline, along with your chin point and hairline. It then calculates the proportional ratios between face width at different levels and your total face length. These ratios are matched against the defined criteria for each of the seven recognized face shapes (oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong, and triangle) to determine your closest match.

All of this processing happens locally in your browser using on-device AI. Your photo is never sent to a server at any point.

Question 2

What face shapes can the detector identify?

Accepted Answer

The tool identifies seven face shapes:

• Oval — balanced proportions, face length about 1.5× the width, gently curved jawline
• Round — similar width and length, full cheeks, soft rounded jaw
• Square — strong angular jawline, forehead and jaw roughly equal in width
• Heart — wide forehead tapering to a narrow, pointed chin
• Diamond — narrow forehead and jaw, with very prominent wide cheekbones
• Oblong — noticeably longer than wide, with similar forehead and jaw width
• Triangle — jaw is the widest part of the face, forehead is narrower

Most people fall closest to one shape but may share characteristics with another, which is completely normal.

Question 3

How accurate is the face shape detection?

Accepted Answer

When the photo guidelines are followed — front-facing, good lighting, hair pulled back, no filters — the AI returns accurate results in the vast majority of cases. The most common reasons for unexpected results are hair covering the forehead or temples (which hides the hairline measurement), a slightly tilted head (which distorts width-to-length ratios), heavy beauty filters applied to the photo, or very low image resolution.

If your result doesn't feel right, try again with a fresh photo following the tips on the homepage. A plain, unfiltered selfie taken in natural light near a window usually gives the best result.

Question 4

What makes a good photo for face shape detection?

Accepted Answer

Four things matter most:

1. Face the camera directly — even a slight tilt changes your apparent proportions and can shift the result by a full shape category.
2. Pull your hair completely back — your hairline is one of the four key measurements. If it's hidden, the AI has to estimate.
3. Use even, natural lighting — shadows that fall across one side of the face can obscure your jawline or cheekbone line.
4. Use an unfiltered photo — beauty mode, face-slimming filters, and eye-enlarging effects all distort the proportions the AI relies on.

Your phone's rear camera in a well-lit room works well. A photo taken near a window with soft daylight is ideal.

Question 5

Why did I get a different result than I expected?

Accepted Answer

A few common reasons:

• Hair covering your forehead or temples — this is the single most common cause of unexpected results. The AI can only measure what it can see.
• Head tilt — even 10–15 degrees changes how wide vs. tall your face appears to the AI.
• Filters or editing — any filter that slims, widens, or alters your face affects the measurement.
• You may genuinely be between two shapes — most people aren't a textbook example of one shape. Read the guide for your result and the shape that also resonates with you; your features likely borrow from both.

Try a second photo with your hair fully back, facing directly forward, with no filters applied.

Question 6

Is my photo stored or shared?

Accepted Answer

No. All analysis happens locally in your browser on your own device. Your photo is never uploaded to any server, never stored in a database, and never used for training data or any other purpose.

You can verify this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and run an analysis. You will see no image data being transmitted during the process. Once you close or refresh the page, the image is gone entirely.

Question 7

Do I need to create an account to use the detector?

Accepted Answer

No account is required. The tool is completely free to use without signing up, logging in, or providing any personal information. There are no premium features locked behind an account and no subscription of any kind.

Question 8

What are the best hairstyles for an oval face shape?

Accepted Answer

Oval faces are the most versatile shape — almost any hairstyle works well. The face is roughly 1.5× longer than wide with balanced proportions and no single dominant feature, which means there are very few styles to avoid.

That said, a few approaches are particularly flattering: long layers that frame the face, soft waves or curls, sleek straight cuts, blunt bobs, and pixie cuts. The main thing to be careful with is extremely heavy, flat fringe (bangs) that completely covers the forehead — this can hide the balanced proportions that make oval faces so versatile. Side-swept bangs and curtain bangs both work well as alternatives.

Question 9

What hairstyles and glasses suit a round face shape?

Accepted Answer

The goal with a round face is to add visual length and reduce the appearance of width.

For hairstyles: long layers, straight styles that fall past the chin, high-volume styles at the crown, and side partings all create an elongating effect. Center partings and very short all-around cuts tend to emphasize the circular silhouette. A blunt bob ending exactly at the chin can also widen the appearance.

For glasses: rectangular, square, and angular frames add definition and contrast against soft round features. Avoid perfectly round frames — they mirror the face shape and can make the face appear even rounder. A slightly wider-than-tall frame works particularly well.

Question 10

How do I style a square face shape?

Accepted Answer

Square faces are defined by a strong, angular jawline and a forehead and jaw that are roughly the same width. Styling tends to focus on softening those angles.

For hairstyles: soft, layered cuts are the most flattering. Romantic waves, side-swept bangs, and styles that add volume above the ears or at the crown all work well. Avoid blunt cuts that end right at the jawline, as they draw attention to the jaw's width and squareness.

For glasses: round and oval frames create the best contrast with angular features. Rimless or semi-rimless styles are also flattering as they're less visually dominant. Avoid boxy square frames, which can overemphasize an already angular jaw.

For makeup: blending contour along the sides of the jaw and the corners of the forehead softens angular lines. Apply highlighter to the center of the chin and center forehead to draw the eye toward softer midpoints.

Question 11

What suits a heart-shaped face?

Accepted Answer

Heart-shaped faces have a wide forehead that tapers to a narrow, pointed chin — often with a widow's peak and high cheekbones. The styling goal is to add visual width to the lower face.

For hairstyles: chin-length bobs, jaw-grazing cuts, and styles that flare out slightly at or below ear level all balance the narrower lower face. Side-swept bangs reduce the visual width of a broad forehead. Avoid very short crops that expose the full forehead width.

For glasses: bottom-heavy frames — those wider at the bottom than the top — add visual weight to the lower face. Cat-eye frames can work in the opposite direction if they're very top-heavy, so look for designs with balanced proportions. Light, rimless, or oval frames are always a safe choice.

For makeup: contour the temples and sides of the forehead lightly, and apply a subtle highlight on the chin to bring it visually forward.

Question 12

What are the best styles for a diamond face shape?

Accepted Answer

Diamond faces have narrow foreheads and jawlines with very wide, prominent cheekbones — making it one of the rarer face shapes. The goal is to add width at the forehead and jaw to balance the cheekbone prominence.

For hairstyles: side-swept bangs or full fringes add width at the forehead. Styles with volume at jaw level — like flipped-out ends or blunt cuts at chin length — broaden the lower face. Avoid styles that maximize volume specifically at cheekbone level.

For glasses: frames with detailing or a brow bar across the top add visual width to the upper face. Cat-eye and oval frames both work well. Wide-cheek-level frames can overemphasize the widest point.

For makeup: highlight the center forehead (slightly out toward the temples) and the jawline. Apply contour lightly under the cheekbones — diamond faces usually don't need much.

Question 13

How do I work with an oblong face shape?

Accepted Answer

Oblong faces are significantly longer than wide, with a forehead, cheekbones, and jaw that are all similar in width. The styling goal is to add width and reduce the visual length.

For hairstyles: full fringes (bangs across the forehead) are one of the most effective tools — they break the vertical line and immediately shorten the apparent face length. Voluminous waves, side-swept styles, and blunt chin-length bobs all add horizontal visual interest. Avoid long, sleek straight styles without volume, and center partings that draw the eye down the length of the face.

For glasses: wide, oversized frames are very flattering — they add width and interrupt the length. Round and square frames both work. Avoid narrow, tall rectangular frames that further elongate the appearance.

Question 14

What works for a triangle face shape?

Accepted Answer

Triangle faces are the inverse of heart shapes — the jaw is the widest part of the face, with a narrower forehead. The goal is to draw attention upward and add volume to the upper face.

For hairstyles: styles with volume or height at the crown and temples are ideal. Side partings, high-volume updos, and cuts with layering above the ears all shift visual weight upward. Avoid styles that add volume at jaw level, like blunt cuts ending at the jawline or very full chin-length styles.

For glasses: look for frames with a strong, defined top line — semi-rimless frames with a solid top bar, cat-eye shapes, or frames with decorative detail across the brow bar. These draw the eye to the upper face and balance the wider jaw. Avoid frameless or bottom-heavy styles.

For makeup: highlight the forehead and temples to add width to the upper face. Contour gently along the sides of the jaw and under the chin.

Question 15

What's the difference between oval and oblong face shapes?

Accepted Answer

Both shapes are longer than wide, which is why they're commonly confused. The key difference is proportion and jaw shape.

An oval face is balanced — the face is about 1.5× longer than wide, and the jaw gently tapers from the cheekbones in a soft curve. The proportions feel harmonious and the chin is rounded.

An oblong face is noticeably elongated — the face length is significantly greater than the width, and the forehead, cheeks, and jaw are all similar in width without much tapering. The cheek lines are relatively straight rather than softly curved.

If you look at your face in the mirror and it seems quite long with a straight, non-tapering jaw, oblong is likely. If it feels balanced with gentle curves throughout, oval is the better fit.

Question 16

What's the difference between heart and diamond face shapes?

Accepted Answer

Both shapes have prominent cheekbones, which causes the confusion. The key difference is the forehead.

A heart-shaped face has a wide forehead — wider than the jaw — and the cheekbones are prominent but the forehead is the visual starting point. The face tapers from a wide top down to a narrow, often pointed chin.

A diamond face has a narrow forehead — making the cheekbones appear even more dominant by comparison. Both the forehead and the jaw are narrow, so the cheekbones are clearly the widest point of the face with narrowing both above and below.

Simple test: look straight at your face and decide whether your forehead or your cheekbones appear widest. If forehead: heart. If cheekbones with a noticeably narrow forehead: diamond.

Question 17

Can I have more than one face shape?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and most people do. The seven face shapes are useful approximations — real faces exist on a spectrum. The AI identifies your dominant shape, which is the category your proportions most closely match.

It's very common to be, for example, between oval and heart (balanced proportions but with a slightly wider forehead), or between square and oblong (angular jaw but with a longer face). In these cases, reading the style guides for both shapes and drawing from both sets of recommendations usually gives the most accurate results for your specific features.

Question 18

Does face shape change with age or weight?

Accepted Answer

It can. Facial fat distribution shifts over time and with weight changes, affecting the apparent fullness of the cheeks, jaw, and chin area. This can change how your face reads proportionally — for example, weight loss can make a round face appear more oval by reducing cheek fullness, and age-related changes in fat distribution can alter the jaw and cheekbone appearance.

Underlying bone structure doesn't change, but since face shape classification is based on apparent proportions rather than pure bone measurements, meaningful changes in weight or significant time passing are good reasons to re-run the analysis.

Question 19

Does the detector work for men as well as women?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Face shape analysis applies equally to men and women — the underlying facial geometry and the seven shape categories are the same. The style recommendations we provide are tailored by gender where relevant (hairstyles in particular differ significantly between men and women), and the tool adjusts its recommendations based on the characteristics present in the photo.
