The 5 Female Body Types

Each body type has distinct proportional characteristics that determine which cuts, silhouettes, and styling approaches work best.

Hourglass

Bust and hips approximately equal with a significantly narrower waist. The most versatile type for fashion.

Pear

Hips notably wider than shoulders and bust. Lower body is fuller with a defined waist.

Apple

Fuller midsection wider than bust and hips. Weight is carried around the middle.

Rectangle

Bust, waist, and hips measure similarly. Straight, athletic silhouette with subtle curves.

Inverted Triangle

Shoulders and bust noticeably broader than hips. Athletic, strong upper body.

Male Body Types

Trapezoid, Rectangle, Oval, Triangle, and Inverted Triangle. Switch to Male in the calculator above.

Beyond Measurements

Kibbe Body Types

The Kibbe system — developed by stylist David Kibbe in 1987 — classifies bodies into 13 types across 5 families based on bone structure, flesh, and facial features. It complements (not replaces) the measurement-based approach above.

Dramatic

Long, angular bone structure with sharp, defined features. Typically tall with a lean frame. Bold, structured, and high-fashion looks work best.

DramaticSoft Dramatic

Natural

Broad, athletic bone structure with blunt, slightly irregular features. Relaxed, effortless, and textured looks are most flattering.

Flamboyant NaturalNaturalSoft Natural

Classic

Perfectly symmetrical and balanced proportions — neither too angular nor too soft. Tailored, polished, and timeless styles suit this type best.

Dramatic ClassicClassicSoft Classic

Gamine

Petite, small-boned frame with high-contrast, sharp-yet-delicate features. Playful, mixed textures, and bold colour-blocking work best.

Flamboyant GamineGamineSoft Gamine

Romantic

Soft, rounded curves with lush, delicate features. Petite-to-medium frame. Feminine, draped, and body-conscious styles are most harmonious.

How to Take Your Measurements

The most common reason for an unexpected result is measuring at the wrong point. Here's exactly how to get it right.

Bust / Chest

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest — usually across the nipple line. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and snug but not compressing.

Common mistake: Measuring too high (collarbone) or too low (ribcage) — both give a smaller reading than your true fullest point.

Natural Waist

Find the narrowest part of your torso — typically 1–2 inches above your belly button. Breathe normally. Bend sideways: the crease that forms marks your natural waist.

Common mistake: Measuring at the belly button (usually too low) or at the hip bones (too low). Both inflate the waist measurement.

Hips

Stand with feet together. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and bottom — usually 7–9 inches below your natural waist. Keep the tape level all the way around.

Common mistake: Measuring at the hip bones rather than the fullest part of the seat. This is almost always too high and gives a smaller reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about body types, the Kibbe system, how to measure, and which styles suit each type.

What are the female body types?

The five main female body types are Hourglass (balanced bust and hips, narrow waist), Pear (hips wider than bust), Apple (fuller waist and midsection), Rectangle (bust, waist, and hips similar widths), and Inverted Triangle (bust and shoulders wider than hips). Each has distinct styling principles that work with its proportions.

How do I use a body type calculator?

Measure your bust, natural waist, and hips with a soft tape measure, then enter the values above and select your gender. The calculator computes your key ratios and classifies your body type automatically — no sign-up or photo needed.

What is the difference between body type and body shape?

"Body type" and "body shape" are used interchangeably in fashion. "Body type" sometimes refers to metabolic categories (ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph) in fitness contexts, while "body shape" refers to your visual silhouette based on measurements. This calculator uses the measurement-based visual silhouette system.

What is the most common female body type?

Pear and rectangle are the most common globally. The hourglass is frequently idealised in media but is estimated to account for only about 8–10% of women — making it the rarest of the five types. Distribution varies by age, ethnicity, and population.

What is the Kibbe body type system?

The Kibbe system (1987) classifies bodies into 13 types across five families: Dramatic, Natural, Classic, Gamine, and Romantic. Unlike measurement-based calculators, Kibbe uses bone structure, flesh distribution, and facial features together. Many people use both systems for a fuller picture.

What is a pear body type?

A pear body type has hips noticeably wider than the bust and shoulders, with a well-defined waist. Styling focuses on broadening the upper body: bold patterned tops, boat necks, off-shoulder styles, structured jackets. A-line and flared skirts work well for the lower half.

What is an hourglass body type?

An hourglass has bust and hips approximately equal (within ~3–5%) with a waist significantly narrower — typically 25% or more smaller than the hips. Almost any silhouette works; the one rule is to keep the waist visible. Wrap dresses, belted styles, and fitted cuts are ideal.

What is the rectangle body type?

A rectangle body type has bust, waist, and hips within roughly 5–8% of each other with minimal natural waist definition. Styling creates curves through peplum tops, belting, wide-leg trousers, colour-blocking, and layering.

What is the apple body type?

An apple body type carries fullness primarily in the midsection — the waist is fuller than the hips and bust. Legs are usually leaner. V-necks, empire-waist dresses, wrap-style tops, and monochromatic outfits work best.

What is the inverted triangle body type?

An inverted triangle has shoulders and bust broader than the hips. The styling goal is adding lower-body volume: A-line skirts, wide-leg trousers, flared jeans, bold prints on the bottom, and V-necks or U-necks to de-emphasise the shoulders.

Can men use a body type calculator?

Yes — switch to Male mode above. Male body types: Trapezoid/V-shape (broad chest, defined waist — classic athletic build), Rectangle (balanced), Oval (fuller midsection), Triangle (hips wider than chest), and Inverted Triangle (dramatically broad shoulders, narrow hips).

Can your body type change over time?

Yes — weight change, muscle gain, pregnancy, hormonal shifts, and ageing can all alter your measurements and proportions. A pear type may shift toward rectangle or apple after menopause. Re-measuring every 6–12 months keeps your classification accurate.

How accurate is a body type calculator?

Ratio-based calculators are the standard method used in fashion and styling. Accuracy depends on precise measurements. Some people naturally fall between two types — this is normal. Use the result as a starting point, not a rigid category.

What measurements does the calculator need?

Three: (1) Bust or chest — fullest part of your chest; (2) Natural waist — narrowest part of your torso, 1–2 inches above the belly button; (3) Hips — fullest part of your hips and bottom, roughly 7–9 inches below the waist. Supports both cm and inches.

What is a body type calculator for women?

A female body type calculator uses bust, waist, and hip measurements to identify which of five body type categories best matches your proportions, then provides clothing and styling recommendations specific to that type.

What clothes suit a pear female body type?

Bold or patterned tops to draw the eye upward, boat necks and off-shoulder styles to broaden shoulders, A-line and flared skirts to skim the hips, and dark solid-colour bottoms. Avoid clingy pencil skirts, tapered trousers, and hip-level pockets.

About Body Type Classification

Body type classification has two main traditions. The measurement-based system — used in this calculator — derives your visual silhouette category (hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, inverted triangle) from the proportional relationships between bust, waist, and hips. This approach was standardised by the fashion industry in the 20th century and remains the most widely used framework by stylists, retailers, and fashion editors worldwide.

The second tradition is the Kibbe system, developed by David Kibbe in his 1987 book Metamorphosis. Kibbe classifies bodies into 13 types across five families — Dramatic, Natural, Classic, Gamine, and Romantic — based on bone structure, flesh distribution, and facial features considered together as a gestalt. Many people find the Kibbe system gives more nuanced style guidance once they understand their measurement-based type, since the two approaches address different aspects of proportion.

The measurement-based calculator works by computing three ratios: bust-to-hip (determines upper-to-lower balance), waist-to-hip (determines waist definition), and waist-to-bust (supplementary check for apple classification). These ratios are compared against established thresholds in a priority order — Inverted Triangle → Apple → Hourglass → Pear → Rectangle — to produce a single classification. The absolute size of your measurements does not affect the result, only their proportional relationships.

Many people find their result changes over time, and some fall naturally between two types. Both outcomes are completely normal. The classification is best used as a starting point for exploring which garment silhouettes are likely to fit well and which styling principles tend to be most flattering — not as a rigid prescriptive category.

Disclaimer

Body type classifications are a simplified framework for styling guidance and are not a medical measurement or a judgement of any kind. Many people fall between two type categories — this is completely normal. Results depend on accurate measurements; variations in posture, clothing, or tape placement will affect the output.
